Line & Wrinkle Injections

Botox by any other name

A drug called Botulinum toxin A (BTX), is what we commonly refer to as ‘Botox’.  This drug has been approved for cosmetic use under several names. You may have heard a lot about this procedure, but what is it exactly and how does it work?

What is it? BTX is administered in several tiny injections, directly into the muscles that cause wrinkles. It is most commonly used for crows feet around the eyes, on the forehead, and on the lines between your eyebrows.

How does it work? By injecting BTX directly beneath the skin, it creates a selective paralysis of the muscles. This means that the tiny muscles in the face that crease up (or ‘wrinkle’) when we smile or raise our eyebrows – after injections, these muscles stay more still and there are typically fewer creases.

BTX is sometimes used together with Dermal Filler treatments for maximum effect.

Will it hurt?

Most clients describe the feeling as a pinch or slight stinging.  Every client is unique, and your practitioner is trained to discuss any concerns you may have before beginning treatment.

How long does it last?

With this procedure, there is no recovery period and most clients are fine to carry on with normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

Results are usually noticeable within one week, and reach full effect in the second week after treatment. You should be able to see results for three to four months.

It is important to realize that while results take effect fairly quickly, they are temporary.  Repeated treatments are required to sustain an on-going result.

History

First manufactured by Allergan Inc (USA), Botulinum toxin A (BTX) is approved for therapeutic and cosmetic use. Researchers discovered its use of muscle paralysis during the 1950′s and began by injecting tiny amounts to treat ‘crossed eyes’ and excessive blinking. It wasn’t until April, 2002 that the FDA approved BTX for cosmetic use. Since then, it has been an extremely common cosmetic procedure. In the US alone there have been over 4.6 million procedures carried out. Figures for the UK are unknown at present.

Potential Side Effects

Following treatment, there may be some redness, swelling and slight bruising, but this usually subsides within 1-2 days. Reported adverse side effects are headaches, focal facial paralysis, muscle weakness, dysphasia, flu-like symptoms, and allergic reactions. Your practitioner will talk these through with you on your consultation.
