Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are most commonly used for the lines which appear from the nose to the corners of the mouth, known by the fun name of nasolabial folds. (Say that three times fast!)

Because they act to fill out and smooth away these grooves, dermal fillers give the appearance of younger looking skin.  This treatment is often used with BTX injections for maximum effect.

Dermal fillers can also be used for ‘plumping’ out crows feet around the eyes, or lines on the forehead.  So-called ‘frown furrows’ and acne pits can also be treated with dermal fillers.

One popular dermal filler treatment is lip augmentation  By injecting the lips, they plump up and have more volume – they appear naturally fuller.

It’s important to note that we DO NOT USE PERMANENT Dermal Fillers.  These treatments are known to have rare permanent side effects that can be painful and sometimes disfiguring.

The Oliver Smith Clinic only uses TEMPORARY FILLERS – most commonly the ingredient used is called hyaluronic acid, an ingredient naturally found in our bodies that gives young skin its fullness and soft appearance, but decreases as we age.  Because this substance is found in our bodies naturally, allergic reactions are extremely rare.

While not permanent, dermal fillers usually last between 6-9 months, depending on the individual.  Like other injectable treatments, however, repeated treatment is required for an on-going result.

Dermal Filler Products

Our most popular dermal fillers at the Oliver Smith Clinic are under the brand name of Teosyal. However, depending on your requirements, we can choose from several fillers.  Bolero, Restylane and Juvederm are among the products we use, depending on the needs of an individual client. Your practitioner will talk to you about the different dermal fillers and which one will be right for you.

Potential Side Effects

Side effects can include swelling, itching, redness, tenderness, and pain around the injection point. These normally resolve after several days but may last up to a week, particularly after lip augmentation.

As with other injectable treatments, dermal fillers are not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your practitioner will discuss all of the contra-indications with you during your consultation and assessment.
